Abstract Summary
Ataxin-2 knockout mice show impaired fear responses and motor hyperactivity while maintaining normal memory function. These mice exhibit defective neural plasticity in the amygdala but not the hippocampus, resulting in reduced fear conditioning yet intact spatial learning. This unique model offers new insights into anxiety disorders and suggests SCA2 patients warrant anxiety screening.
