Abstract Summary

Indian mortality rates are primarily driven by economic factors rather than social caste, according to analysis of 217,000 individuals. Those in the lowest income and asset groups faced up to 3x higher death risk. Surprisingly, households with lowest consumption showed lower mortality, suggesting complex economic-health relationships beyond simple spending patterns.

Why Brain? 🧠

Economic factors, particularly household assets and income, drive mortality disparities in India more than caste, though caste influences economic opportunities affecting health outcomes.
