Abstract Summary

Male circumcision could prevent millions of HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Models based on trial data showing 60% reduced transmission suggest full coverage over 10 years could avert 2 million new infections and 300,000 deaths initially, with 3.7 million more infections prevented in the following decade. The greatest impact would occur in southern Africa where circumcision rates are low and HIV prevalence is high.
