Abstract Summary

Contrary to expectations, sildenafil (Viagra) worsened decompression sickness in rats. While nitric oxide-releasing agents show promise in preventing DCS, this study found sildenafil pre-treatment increased DCS symptoms from 6% to 34% and reduced platelet counts more than controls. These surprising results suggest divers using phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors should consult physicians before diving.

Why Brain? 🧠

Study reveals sildenafil (Viagra) increases decompression sickness risk in divers by 5-fold, causing more severe neurological symptoms despite its blood vessel-dilating effects, urging caution for divers using this medication.
