Abstract Summary

Pigs fed kitchen scraps showed dramatically higher hepatitis E virus rates (87% vs 53% antibody-positive, 62% vs 0% RNA-positive) compared to those on commercial feed in China. All isolates belonged to genotype 4d, closely related to human strains, highlighting food safety risks.

Why Brain? 🧠

Pigs fed kitchen scraps show 87% hepatitis E infection vs 53% in those fed commercial feed. Kitchen waste may be a key transmission route for this zoonotic virus that can spread to humans.
